Five Guys started out in Arlington, Virginia back in 1986 when Jerry and Janie Murrell offered sage advice to their young sons: “Start a business or go to college”. The business route won and the Murrell family opened their first burger joint named, simply, Five Guys – after the five brothers.
The formula was as uncomplicated as it comes. Burgers and fries – cooked to perfection – and that's it. But what a formula it turned out to be!
Jerry's philosophy was simple: “To perfect and serve. That's the principle that has brought us so far. It's the promise we make every day to our customers who count on us to keep delivering the food and experience they love”.
Ever-passionate about Five Guys, the Murrell Family members still meet every Tuesday and all continue to play key roles in the business; each contributing their finely-honed skills and expertise.
No freezers. No microwaves.
No timers. No can-openers.
We don't have freezers on-site because we don't use frozen ingredients. At Five Guys, everything's cooked fresh from scratch. That's the way we like people to serve food to us, so why would we serve our customers any other way?
Sure, we're great believers in keeping life simple. But if the simplicity of freezing food means compromising on its quality and flavour, then we're just not going to do it. For us, fresh and delicious go hand-in-hand. And what could be simpler than that?
So our potatoes are hand-cut daily. We always tell you where they come from too, with posters on our walls. And our beef comes in from Ireland so it doesn't have to travel far. Plus, it's grain-finished for the last 120 days to give it the marbled texture perfect for mince.
We don't use automated cooking timers, because great cooking is all about knowing instinctively when food is perfectly cooked - based on sight, aroma and texture. What's more, we prep all our food daily only to ensure maximum freshness. This is good food the way it deserves to be cooked – no corners cut, no cheaper alternatives, all about flavour.

It's your meal. So it's our belief that you should get exactly what you want. With burgers, hotdogs, sandwiches and a multitude of toppings, you've got more than 250,000 possible topping combinations to choose from (not-to-mention the 1,000 mix-in milkshake combinations).
That said, lots of our customers relish the prospect of their regular favourite meal each time they visit. Whatever tickles your own personal taste buds. Total freedom!
